Q. Who is TRD?
TRD USA Inc. is the official corporate name of our company. The acronym stands for Toyota Racing Development. TRD USA is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. TRD Japan is our sister company.
TRD USA is comprised of two divisions: CART and Sales/Special Projects. The CART Racing Divisionıs sole responsibility is the design, development and at-track support of Toyota engines utilized in the FedEx CART Championship Series.
The Sales/Special Projects group is responsible for the design, development and marketing of aftermarket, high-performance parts for Toyota vehicles and Toyota engines. Additionally, the Special Projects group engineers race engines and provides on-track support for other Toyota factory-backed programs, including the Toyota Atlantic Championship, Ivan Stewartıs racing program, Rod Millen and Johnny Greaves CORR program, Rod Millenıs Pikes Peak hill climb, NASCAR Goodyıs Dash with Eric Van Cleef and more.
Q. What do the names TRD Sport Part and Kazuma have to do with your business?
From its inception in 1975 through 1996, TRD USA sold and distributed aftermarket high performance parts and race parts without benefit of a targeted distribution or branding strategy. In 1996 we announced our TRD Sport Part brand and designated a new channel of distribution for this particular brand, Toyota dealers.
Although our business plan focused heavily on TRD Sport Parts and the Toyota dealer distribution channel from 1996 until early 2000, we continued to sell non-TRD Sport Parts, but still without benefit of a brand name or a specific distribution channel.
In June, 2000, we announced an expansion of our non-TRD Sport Parts business under the brand name ³Kazuma² and began a program to overhaul our non-Toyota dealer distribution channel to support this particular brand.
Q. Can I buy a Kazuma part at my local Toyota dealer?
Check with your local Toyota dealer to see if they are a qualified Kazuma distributor. If not, call TRD to purchase the part directly or for assistance in locating the nearest distributor.
Q. What is the difference between a Kazuma part and a TRD Sport Part?
A. : There is nothing that physically distinguishes a Kazuma part from a TRD Sport Part. Whether a part or product is branded as Kazuma or TRD Sport Part depends entirely on which target market and brand strategy it supports.
TRD Sport Parts are usually bolt-on, OE-type, direct-replacement products that satisfy the customerıs need to enhance the performance of his/her Toyota without sacrificing the security of the Toyota new vehicle warranty. Generally speaking, they are fully warranted, fully compatible with the Toyota new vehicle warranty, conservative by design (meaning they do not significantly decrease driver/passenger comfort), street legal and meet all emission regulations.
The Kazuma brand targets a more aggressive and broader market segment. The Kazuma customer is not generally concerned about the partıs effect on new vehicle warranty. His vehicle may even be outside the new vehicle warranty period. He is willing to make additional modifications if necessary to insure that his vehicle will withstand the additional stresses resulting from the installation of the performance part. The Kazuma customer is more willing to sacrifice ride quality, noise and inconvenience for the additional level of performance to be gained. The Kazuma customer may require an emissions certification to keep the vehicle street legal, or he may not.
At the most extreme end of the continuum between TRD Sport Part and Kazuma customers is one who builds a no-compromise, race version of a Toyota engine that will never be operated on the street. He expects no warranty, and emission certification does not apply.
The application of a particular type part also can be a determining factor in the brand name that it carries. Due to the different design parameters engineered into the various Toyota models, a part or component offered for one model may carry a different brand than a similar part or component offered for another model.
